Light Tubes System is "Skylights on Steroids"
A BRIGHT IDEA: SUNLIGHT IS ECONOMICALLY-SAVVY
Revolutionary Energy Saving System Makes Début in Up-North Business

Traverse City, MI (September 17, 2009) – Two local companies are bringing an energy first to Traverse City – the latest in lighting technology. “The ApolloTM Light Pipe is going to make a big difference for businesses,” said Terry Umlor, President of Springfield Commercial Roofing, the only northern Michigan partner of award-winning Orion Energy Systems (oesx.com, Manitowoc, Wisconsin). “This fixture is like a skylight on steroids,” he said, “and can save a company 50-80% on lighting costs.”

Today, Springfield Commercial Roofing installed Apollo™ Light Pipes at the Hybra Advance Technology, Inc. (hybratech.com) facility on Woodmere Avenue. The partners at Hybra Tech chose to install these fixtures for several reasons. “Number one, we’re the good idea people, and this is a good idea,” says Joe Thiel, cofounder of the ideation company that brings advanced technologies from the drawing board to market. Thiel and his partner, Ryan Wells, decided to install the Apollo™ Light Pipe as an efficient and eco-friendly way to light their retrofitted facility. “Sunlight is captured and then reflected evenly into the building providing clear and clean daylight,” said Wells, who has used similar fixtures in commercial settings. “As sunlight increases through the day, an ambient light sensor triggers banks of lights to turn off so that there is a consistent amount of light. Never too much and never too little, meaning we won’t spend extra money on artificial lighting we don’t need.”

Skylights in Northern Michigan? “This design is great for a northern climate,” says Umlor. “We’ve designed a custom boot for the installation so that we can create a waterproof, long-lasting installation which will minimize heating/cooling loss and maximize the return on investment.”

Thiel says about the Orion Apollo™ light pipes, “These fixtures are cutting edge; they’ve been used around the world to save companies like Miller Brewing and Cabela’s millions of dollars in lighting costs. They provide superior light, and for a business like ours - where everything we do is about new technology and forward thinking – they are a natural choice.”

The professional roofers at Springfield Commercial Roofing have been so impressed with the Orion product that they’re donating the installation of Apollo™ Light Pipes for Kingsley’s The Rock, a center under development for young people in Grand Traverse County. “Orion works with companies to finance the product cost by taking their payment in the form of energy cost savings over time,” Thiel said. “It’s a win-win-win situation: we’re not wasting energy, we’re getting superior light, and our investment pays off right from the start.”

Six of the fixtures will provide lighting for the 2,000 square foot building with a projected energy-savings of $1,600 annually. Photos depict the interior of the space before the Apollo™ Light Pipes were installed, and after. When adequate sunlight is unavailable, the system triggers high efficiency LED lighting to augment natural light for consistent lumination within the facility during office hours. Springfield has customized roofing boots to ensure watertight installation and years of efficient use.
